It would be difficult to find a destination in Russia more out of the way than Birobidzhan, a province of Russia located in southeastern Siberia bordering Mongolia to the west and China to the south. About 220,000 people live in Birobidzhan province, most in the capitol, which is also named Birobidzhan. In the early part of the 20th century, the Soviet government deemed the region to be strategic and initiated efforts to populate it.
Vladivostok is a curiosity, a Russian city with Japan Seas around it. It is also the closest European city to Asia with a Caucasian population. Historically, it was closely controlled by the Czars of Russia and then the Soviet Union; but now it is coming into its own.
Russia, as the world’s largest country in land area, encompasses many climates as it stretches from the far northern wastes to the sun-drenched shores of the Black Sea. It is here, surrounded by palm trees and lulled by the sound of the crashing waves, that Russians (and a growing number of foreign tourists) love to take their vacations.
Bakhchisaray today is a sleepy town of about 35,000 people located in the Crimea, a peninsula belonging to the Ukraine but historically part of Russia. It was from Bakhchisaray that numerous wars and invasions of Russia were directed by a succession of powerful Khans and warlords.
We have to be grateful that all the 20th century repression has doused none of the quintessential spirit of the people of this great land. It appears that they will build a new economy to rival their erstwhile peers from East Germany. Russia is on one of the most exciting growth paths, which is the envy of the world. Visitors and business people are increasingly enamored of the advantages that Russia offers. While much is made of China and India in the public space, it is in Russia that we find the most dramatic developments taking place.
